In theory this should be immensely depressing (Lyrics & expression mainly), but this stuff actually has a very calming effect. The arrangements are sublime... A terrific Soul album.

X-Legged Sally - Killed By Charity (1993)
Can't find the words to explain how much X-Legged Sally rules. Exhaustingly complex fusion-tinged avant-prog, it will fucking melt your brain!

My Little Airport - The OK Thing to Do on Sunday Afternoon Is to Toddle in the Zoo (2004)
This thing got me hooked instantly, I guess I love it for pretty much the same reasons I love early Magnetic Fields. Yeah, that's a fine comparison.

Joe Harriott Quintet - Free Form (1960)
Possibly my favourite early Free Jazz album. They sound very cohesive as a group, and listening to them is fun and pleasureable. I'm diggin' this, lots.

Fred Frith & Keep the Dog - The House We Lived In (2003)
Whoa. This might just be some of the tastiest RIO ever created. A double-live CD of pure avant-prog madness, just check out the line-up:
Fred Frith: guitar, bass, violin, voice
Jean Derome: alto, baritone saxophone, flute, guimbarde, voice
Charles Hayward: drums, found objects, melodica, voice
Rene Lussier: guitar, bass
Zeena Parkins: accordion, electric harp, piano, synthesizer, voice
Bob Ostertag: sampler
This is furious and exciting, I'm drooling! If you think you can stomach a 96 minutes long non-stop mindfuck, proceed...

Jun Togawa - Tamahime-Sama (1984)
This is the debut album by actress and singer Jun Togawa, a name that is now stuck in my head thanks to discovering Guernica (a personal favourite), which she was part of. Her vocal style is distinct, and this stuff is some great New Wave with mild experimentation.

Harpy - Do Not Eat (1997)
As the album cover promises, very weird music. By the Japanese, obviously. Contains a bunch of short, quirky avant-prog-post-punk-pop numbers. Would be the hippest thing ever if tha hip knew about it.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what the track names are.

Eiko Ishibashi - Drifting Devil (2009)
New Eiko Ishibashi! She mainly plays piano and drums, but also flute, marimba, and more. Plus, her vocals are gorgeous. this is an incredibly beautiful album, although her debut might be better.
